2020 Commencement Updates

UPDATE: MAY 28, 2020

Spring 2020 Commencement Plans Still Forthcoming

On May 21, 2020, NC State announced changes to the Fall 2020 academic calendar that include an earlier start to the semester and ending the term prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. As such, plans for the Fall 2020 Commencement ceremony, which was originally scheduled for Thursday, December 17, will be announced at a later date.

A new date for the Spring 2020 Commencement ceremony has not yet been finalized. The university is committed first and foremost to ensuring the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and Wolfpack families and friends, and we continue to work with local and state authorities and health officials in determining the best possible course of action regarding rescheduled commencement events.

We know how much of an accomplishment graduation is, and we understand and appreciate how eager our Wolfpack families and friends are to celebrate our graduates’ achievements. We look forward to being able to celebrate in person when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to click here for continued celebrations of and stories from the Class of 2020.

Updates will continue to be posted to the NC State University Commencement website and the NC State Coronavirus Information website as information becomes available.

UPDATE: MARCH 24, 2020

Spring 2020 Commencement Exercises Postponed

The following letter was sent from Chancellor Randy Woodson to the graduating Class of 2020 and the Wolfpack community on Tuesday, March 24, 2020:

“Dear Class of 2020,

Over the last few weeks, COVID-19 has significantly disrupted our university’s operations – and the lives of all NC State students, faculty and staff – in ways we couldn’t have imagined when we started the spring semester in January. Unfortunately, those disruptions continue.

Given the evolving nature of COVID-19 and based on current recommendations from healthcare officials, we have made the difficult decision to postpone – not cancel – all spring 2020 commencement exercises.

We know you have worked incredibly hard and looked forward to graduation day for a long time. We understand this is not only an important milestone for you, but also for your families and loved ones. We are very proud of you all – undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional students who will soon graduate – and we look forward to celebrating your success with commencement exercises when it is safe to do so.

Be assured, this will not impact the completion of your degree requirements. You will still graduate on time.

We’ll release more information about updated commencement plans in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, thank you for your flexibility and understanding. Although this semester doesn’t look like what we had planned or hoped for, I encourage you to do all you can to stay healthy, stay focused and finish strong.

Randy Woodson

Chancellor”

Additional updates regarding Spring 2020 commencement decisions will continue to be posted to our website as they are made, as well as on the NC State COVID-19 Response website.

UPDATE: March 20, 2020

NC State Weighing Options

The following was shared in a letter from Chancellor Randy Woodson to the NC State community on Friday, March 20, 2020:

“…you may have heard the UNC System announced today that system spring commencement ceremonies will likely be disrupted due to the spread of COVID-19. NC State is weighing all of our options and will announce a final decision about commencement activities in the next few days. However, I want to reassure all of our eligible graduates who are planning to graduate in May that any changes to commencement will not impact the completion of your degree requirements. You will graduate on time regardless of when we celebrate this achievement through formal commencement exercises.”

Additional updates regarding Spring 2020 commencement decisions will continue to be posted to our website as they are made, as well as on the NC State COVID-19 Response website.
